COVID-19:  Update and Policy

Back in Action Health Clinics’ primary priority is the health, welfare and safety of its patients and therapists.  We are therefore concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications for our practice.

The Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health has since released a directive to regulated health professionals or persons who operate a group practice of regulated health professionals, directing that “all non-essential and elective services should be ceased or reduced to minimal levels, subject to allowable exceptions, until further notice. Allowable exceptions can be made for time sensitive circumstances to avert or avoid negative patient outcomes or to avert or avoid a situation that would have a direct impact on the safety of patients.”

Consistent with many other health regulatory college positions on this matter, what constitutes emergency care is largely dependent on the individual practitioner's knowledge, skill and judgment. Emergency care would include:

  • Care for patients experiencing a sudden and debilitating change in functional abilities (understood as walking, standing, sitting, lifting floor-to-waist or waist-to-shoulder, stair climbing, ladder climbing) or significant restrictions (experienced during bending/twisting, repetitive movement, pushing/pulling with right/left arm) as well as injury to head/neck/back and extremities.

  • Treatment aimed at alleviating significant pain, understood as pain that is incapacitating for the patient and interferes with their ability to carry out normal functioning.

Therefore, and in line with this most recent directive from the Province of Ontario, Back in Action Health Clinic must until further notice practise only emergency care as described above.

We are taking all of their recommendations and suggestions seriously and accordingly:

    • As an alternative, all non-essential appointments can be changed to virtual appointments where you will meet face-to-face with your health care provider via video call.

    • Please contact us to arrange/keep an appointment if you fall into this category.

    • Not all health care practitioners will be available to service you.

    • Your health care practitioner will be in contact with you with suggestions.

    • You will be asked to answer all COVID-19 screening questions prior to your session.

  • Kinesiology (Exercise), Social Work and Holistic Nutrition sessions will be offered through VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS

As we all try to deal with COVID-19 and the recommendations made by our health officials, we ask that you observe the following:

  • Stay home if you are sick

  • Self-isolate for 14 days.

  • Please do not arrive in our office early for your appointment. It is part of our protocol to adhere to social distancing by not having anyone wait in the reception area.  Our goal will be to move you straight into a treatment room.

  • We ask that all visitors to the clinic disinfect their hands upon arrival, and necessary hand sanitizing products are available.

  • If paying directly, patients will be allowed to send an e-transfer or call the office with their credit card information to avoid touching the debit/credit terminal.

This situation is frightening and overwhelming for us all.  Know that we take your overall health, as well as your care, very seriously and we are monitoring this virus crisis as it continues to develop.
